Volunteering Event 2nd June 2014

On 2nd June Worcestershire County Council and Worcestershire Voices held a joint event to celebrate volunteering across the county. The aim of the event was to showcase the valuable work being undertaken by volunteers and to celebrate volunteering and the positive impact that these activities have in a variety of ways whether it be improved community relations, enhanced environmental or conservation areas, youth clubs or arts and drama groups. What was clearly demonstrated at this event was the wide range of different volunteering activities that are taking place in Worcestershire and the commitment and enthusiasm of the volunteers themselves.

A number of volunteer champions were identified who had been volunteering for some time in a variety of ways and who could ‘fly the flag’ for volunteering. We have captured their profiles.

We also had the opportunity to film a number of the champions talking about their volunteering experiences and motivations.  Highlights can be viewed here and a longer video here.

The event attracted over 80 organisations showcasing their work in the marketplace from midday to 4.30 pm which included demonstrations and exhibitions from CVEC outside. The day concluded with music, entertainment in the form of a ventriloquist act from Reaction Theatre Makers who spoke to a number of Volunteer Champions and speakers, a specifically written poem by the poet laureate Maggie Doyle and words from Cllr Lucy Hodgson , Cabinet Member with responsibilities for Localism and Communities, Clare Marchant, Chief Executive of Worcestershire County Council and Michael Hunter, Chair of Worcestershire Voices. The Volunteer Champions who were able to attend were congratulated and each awarded a certificate. The day was a great success, made all the more enjoyable with the home made cakes, some cakes being made by Cllr Lucy Hodgson, tea and coffee served by the Salvation Army and opportunities to meet the many organisations that attended and find out more about them and the people that are involved.

This was a great way to start National Volunteering week here in Worcestershire and we hope this is only the beginning of events like these. Worcestershire Voices is hoping to do another event next year building on and developing the theme of celebrating volunteers in Worcestershire. Please look out for details as to how you can get involved at

Feedback from the event on the 2nd June can be found here.
